Week 7 Journal

I feel like my MRP is coming along, slowly but surely. Now that I go on my web blog and see all of the things I have done I am kind of excited just to get it all finished so I can see the finished project. This week the first genre I submitted was the poem. I chose to do the 5W poem and it is based on the 5W questions like who, what, where, when, and why. I thought this was a neat way to write a poem because you have to think about your topic in a different perspective to complete this poem.
I enjoyed the time on Wednesday we had to complete some assignments. I did some of my work on notebook paper first so I could let it absorb for a few days and then I posted it on Sunday. This method seemed to work well for me because I could look over my work for a second time and get new ideas or just make last minute changes.
I’m really excited about the power point presentation it seems to be fun and colorful. So far I have just planned to incorporate my focus questions in the presentation by making editing them in the header of the slide and post a brief response to each one in the body of the slide. I also formed a word web to show how some terms are related.
The prompt for the 3r’s of Inquiry required me to think the most in this weeks assignments. I wanted to ask a good question so I could incorporate many of my thoughts about the article into it. This assignment brought to my attention how difficult developing a prompt for me to answer could be. I found myself skimming through the paragraphs asking myself, “what could I ask?” Finally, I took the article’s advice and tried not to “answer the question” but instead ask a question I thought would be interesting.
Last but not least I am glad we are doing the peer reviews because I think everyone’s work can always be better, especially mine. I also like to hear input from others that are working on the same project as me.

A 2.3.4: Inquiry and Literacy

How may reading this article alter your thinking in the way you perceive the 3r’s of inquiry? Why or Why not?

Reading this article has changed the way I perceive the 3r’s. Before reading this, I perceived reading, writing, and research to be related but still very separate units. Now, I think they are all very important factors that connect to allow great learning and thinking to take place. The 3r’s are definitely interdependent of each other. When you read you decode words and use that information for a better understanding. By writing we are able to convey our thoughts and ideas to others with talking or meeting with them face to face. Research is where we obtain information by collecting new ideas and thoughts on a particular topic. In turn, we continue our thinking and ultimately our learning and the process continues. The fact that many students, including me, try to “look for the answer” for their research and you end up not seeing the forest for the trees. By using the 3r’s of inquiry together and allowing enough time for each reading, writing, and research (which all require thinking) will help your finished project be nicely constructed more informative. I feel I will be more aware of my reading, writing, and research by reading this article.

Hemphill Elementary
P.O. Box 555
Welch, WV 24828

Dear Parent /Guardian:

My Name is Tiffany Gentry; I will be your child's Speech Therapist during the upcoming school year. This is my first year being a speech therapist in the McDowell County School System. I am a graduate of Marshall University with a Master's Degree in Communication Disorders. While at Marshall I gained experience through labs and clinical sessions that assisted in my understanding of individuals who have communication disorders. In my spare time, I enjoy watching sports and being active within the community.

In the upcoming year your child will be developing skills of organization, through phonological and phonemic sessions. In a phonological session we select a letter and focus on words that have similar letter sounds. In phonemic sessions we will stress sound knowledge. The first curricular unit is based on rhyming pairs. If at any time during the year you would like to visit and monitor your child's development please contact me. I will also be working collaboratively with other teachers to insure that your child's needs are being met.

If you have any questions during the year feel free to contact me at any time. The contact information is as follows:
