Learning Needs

I have many interests in the field of speech pathology. However, at this point in my undergraduate career, I am particularly interested in children’s reading abilities and how early phonological awareness intervention may impact it. I am currently tutoring children in grades one and two that need help with reading. There are several techniques that may be used when tutoring a child who may have trouble reading. With this topic in I think an essential question for me would be: How may phonological awareness intervention impact a child’s early reading abilities? The only difference between this question and the last one is I changed the key word phonetic to phonological. I think the term phonological awareness would be more appropriate because I think this would give me a wider range of ideas to work with as opposed to phonetic awareness. I am familiar with this topic somewhat from our 422L we did at the daycare. I don’t know what types of phonological awareness intervention seem to be more helpful as opposed to others. As I learn about this topic I would also like to obtain statistics on this topic.

Essential Question

What are the areas of professional practice that capture my interest (this might be a disorder, anything relating to treatment or diagnosis, etc.)? With respect to this general topic, what would an essential question for me be? What do I already know about this topic? What don't I know about this topic?

I am interested in how early awareness to letters and rhymes can help a child to be a more advanced reader. I tutor first graders in reading and I notice that some of the kids that are having trouble also still write some of their letters backwards. This is really amazing to me and I would love to learn what correlation, if any exists between early phonological awareness and a child’s ability to read. Which leads me to my question:
How can early intervention of phonological awareness increase a child’s reading abilities?
I don’t know any concrete information about this topic. However, I’ve had experience with children in 422L and at work while tutoring. I think another area of interest for me would be to learn more about information processing in children with learning disabilities and how they would compare to children who are developing within normal limits.
